personality
Luffy may seem very simple on the outside but he is in fact pretty complex. The first impression of him would probably be a not so smart, easygoing, and outgoing boy that gets very excited very easily.

This is very much not the case. Luffy actually has amazing intuition, is very caring, and has the ability to be serious if he needs to. He is also one of the most determined people in all manga history; he will never give up on what he believes in.

You would never be able to tell it from meeting him, but Luffy has the ability to figure out the most basic problem with almost any situation and find out what needs to be done about it, while everyone else tends to ignore it. He always acts so carefree and clueless, but he can just follow his instincts and he’ll come up with the right thing to say. One example is when the crew is heading to Alabasta and Luffy proclaims that he quits. He says it is foolish of Vivi to believe that she can stop the war with no one dying. She says she is willing to risk her life, but Luffy says that’s not enough. She says she has nothing else, and Luffy tells her to try risking their lives too.

Luffy cares deeply about everyone in his crew and all the friends he makes. He is willing to do anything for them, and it upsets him greatly when someone hurts them. During the Arlong saga when Luffy finds out how much Arlong hurt Nami he got really mad. He ripped apart the room Arlong kept her in and beat him to a pulp. When he was finished he screams to the world that Nami is his friend. Once Luffy becomes attached to someone he will do anything in his power to help him or her.

Luffy is usually very open and carefree. He has a very optimistic nature and doesn’t let the little things bother him. He seems to have picked up this trait from Shanks, because when he was a kid he was pretty uptight. He loves adventure. So when the other crewmembers are dreading something he gets very excited. Danger is what he lives for, and he likes to fight. It seems as if he doesn’t care about much, but he has the ability to become serious if he needs to, especially during fights. If he tells you something when he’s serious then he means it. He doesn’t act serious for nothing.

Luffy’s determination is what really makes his character shine. He’s not afraid of anything, even death. This determination inspires many people around him to stand up for what they believe in. He makes his beliefs clear and will never give up on them. In fights, his determination intimidates his opponents. Every time you knock him down he jumps back up. He is extremely confident in his skills and will never walk away from a fight.

Though Luffy can be very serious, most of the time he is pretty clueless and quite funny. That’s why I love him, he does the most stupid things and is the last person you would expect to be the captain of a pirate ship. He is always obsessing over food, and doing careless things, but he’s too cute and funny!! One of my favorite parts of the manga is after Nami has repaired his hat. He is poking at it while Nami is telling him it should be okay if he’s careful with it. Sure enough he pokes a hole in so Nami jabs him with the needle. OW! That hurt, he cries. He asks why he she poked him, and she tells him that it doesn’t do anything if she punches him. He thinks that it makes sense. Luffy’s character just makes the manga so interesting, while the fights are cool and all it’s just so much fun because Luffy is there.
