Well first of all I’d like to say something about Luffy family. The first chapter is the pretty much the only insight we have to Luffy’s home life. There seemed to be no mention of any parents but I’m not sure if they died, went away or just weren’t important to the storyline. However there were some people (mainly only in the first chapter of the manga) that did care about Luffy so I will list them here in the family section.

Makino: She is the kind hearted owner of a small tavern in Luffy's home town. She seems to look out for Luffy all the time, and allows him to have a tab because she trusts he'll bring back treasure to pay for it. She's really nice to everyone and seems to have a special relationship with Shanks.

Mayor: The Mayor of Luffy's home town doesn't seem to like him much, but I think everyone in the town likes the little rubber boy. When Luffy gets captured by mountains bandits he does plead with them to let Luffy go, proving he cares. He doesn't want Luffy to be a pirate because he thinks it will disgrace the town, but he just stands by as Luffy sails off 10 years later.

Also, in the middle of volume 18 we learn that Luffy has a brother!! He has a different surname than Luffy and it hasn’t yet been revealed why. He is three years older than Luffy also so that makes him around 20 years old. He also ate the MeraMera fruit so he can make fire.

Portgas D. Ace: He is Luffy’s older brother and is part of the Whitebeard pirate crew. We first see him when he comes to ask Luffy to join the Whitebeard crew. He really respects Whitebeard and thinks he is the greatest pirate ever. He left home 3 years before Luffy did, before he ate the devil fruit. Even then Luffy couldn’t beat him in a fight, but Luffy thinks he can beat him now. Ace really cares for his little brother and wants to make sure he is safe. He also gave Luffy an important piece of paper so that they can meet again at “The Pirate’s Summit”. I think Luffy looks up to his brother also, and really cares about him too.
