Monkey D. Luffy: The young rubber human on a quest to find One Piece and be Pirate King. When he was young he ate the Gomu Gomu (rubber) fruit making it possible for him to stretch any part of his body in exchange for never being able to swim. It seemed impossible for a headstrong, somewhat careless young boy to ever make it in the harsh world of pirates, but Luffy acquires an amazing crew and proves again and again that he will not give up. He speaks his mind at any and all times, not afraid to say what he feels. Though a bit naïve, Luffy seems to lack common sense but he has amazing intuition in tough situations and can figure out the problem without even thinking. His name can also be spelled Rufi.
Roronoa Zoro: Luffy’s first companion. Zoro’s goal is to be the greatest swordsman on earth because of a promise he made when he was a child. Zoro fights with the three swords technique (one in each hand, the third in his mouth). Before he met Luffy he was a famous bounty hunter. Luffy just sort of decided that Zoro was coming with him and that was that. Zoro’s biggest challenge in becoming the greatest swordsman is Mihawk, who is also one of the seven armed seas. Zoro sometimes pushes himself past the limit and usually ends up fighting with injuries from his previous fight. When not found fighting Zoro is either sleeping or training.
Nami: One of the best navigators, Nami is truly a thief at heart. She first joins Luffy under false pretences. Soon after she runs away, but Luffy helps her save her hometown and proves that he wants her to come with him as a friend. Nami’s goal is to create a complete map of the world. Even after there is no reason to Nami steals. Money seems to be her one true love, next to her mother, sister and oranges. She can talk her way out of anything, but she does care about the rest of the crew. Once she pretended she wasn’t sick to help them reach Alabasta as soon as possible. Even though she seems very sneaky and uncaring on the outside, Nami will do anything to help the ones she cares about.
Usopp: Supposedly a sharpshooter, Usopp is much better at lying and running away from fights. He joins up with Luffy so he can be a great adventurer. He wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, who was part of Shank’s crew. Although he may seem very cowardly Usopp will do his part when it is really needed. He’s the most cautious in the crew, and is a bit book smart. He likes thinking up new ammunition for his slingshot (he comes up with some very creative ones). He also makes Nami a new weapon at one point in the series. He is also quite the artist; he even made the flag they use. Overall Usopp is much better left thinking up strategies than actually fighting.
Sanji: The resident chef and ladies man. Sanji joined with Luffy after he paid off a debt he owed since he was a child. He often gets in fights with Luffy (Luffy likes to eat a LOT). He would much rather serve Nami, or any other lady on board. His fighting style is kicking, which he quite strong at. He and Zoro are always in fights to prove which one is stronger. He, Zoro, and Luffy are the toughest fighters on the ship, while he, Luffy, and Usopp are the biggest goofballs (can anyone say “Three Stooges”?). His reason for sailing is to find the legendary “All Blue”, a sea that has every kind of fish.
Tonitony Chopper: Chopper is a blue-nosed reindeer that ate a devil’s fruit that gives him the ability to change into a human. He was outcast by reindeers and humans alike until he met Dr. Hiruluk, a fake doctor. Luffy proved he didn’t care that he was a reindeer and an outcast (he was quite impressed with Chopper’s fighting style). He’s also a doctor, the reason why all the other crewmembers wanted him to come with them. Chopper has the ability to change into 7 different forms for three minutes when he uses a rumble ball. He’s quite gullible, and believes everything he hears. But he’s a nice guy and is pretty strong too.
Nico Robin: Also known as Miss All Sunday. She was part of Baroque Works, and when she was 8 she sunk 6 marine battle ships. She has the powers to grow as many limbs as she wants because she ate the Hana – Hana Fruit (Flower) and is considered very dangerous (her bounty was 79 million Beli when she was a child). She ended up joining Luffy’s crew because she couldn’t forgive him for saving her after she had nothing left to live for, so she decides to join his crew because she has no place else to go. She is very intelligent and an excellent fighter. Although she is pleasant to all the crew members, she often says very morbid things.
